Whale skulls! #biology #science #naturalhistory #whale #sea #ocean #ucmp
Creepy looking but very awesome. Hopefully they died of natural causes…
They belong to the UC Museum of Paleontology! I got to go on an intern field trip to where they store some the over-sized fossils (and just stuff that doesn’t fit on campus) a few weeks ago. Most of the stuff there are from the La Brea Tar Pits, but there were things from other places, too.
Since they’re in a research museum, I am assuming that the response to your concern is similar one to the one given in this video from thebrainscoop. I’m interning on a project that doesn’t involve working with fossils (but instead, more with educational resources, and lots and lots of maps on climate change and land use change and temperature change and all those other wonderful conservation topics), and I’m not sure how they got the skulls, but I think, if not from natural causes, they died in a way that can be accepted by most people.
From an environmental science, policy, and management student point of view, I can go on a whole rant about hypocritical “environmental” and “humane” activists and what their campaigns are doing to indigenous hunters, but that’s a fire to start some other time.
